An 18th-century Baroque palace designed by Guerrero y Torres, Foro Valparaíso spent decades as Banamex's headquarters before becoming a free museum in the Centro Histórico. The collection of Mexican painting is legitimately strong - original works by Rivera, Kahlo, Siqueiros, Remedios Varo, Velasco, and Carrington occupy quiet, well-maintained galleries where crowds rarely accumulate. The spiral staircase lined with talavera tiles is the visual anchor (you can observe it, not walk it). Staff here receive consistent praise. The real catch: the museum also functions as corporate messaging for the bank, and the 'financial education' galleries interrupt the rhythm of looking at art. Worth it if you're combining painting, architecture, and Centro history in one admission-free visit.
The helical staircase tiled in talavera is reason enough to go, and the fact that Rivera, Kahlo, and Siqueiros hang quietly on the same walls, in a free baroque palace in the Centro Histórico, makes it one of the better decisions you can make with an afternoon
