Paine Grande holds an advantage no other refuge in the zone can match: it sits inside the park itself, towers and lake in front, trailheads minutes away on foot. The beds are clean and firm, the bar is genuinely warm at day's end, and when staff performs, you feel it. But the common bathrooms stay neglected - cold water, floors that don't get proper attention, broken fixtures that repeat season after season. Dining lines run long and meal slots close early for late arrivals off the mountain. Rental camping gear arrives chemically strong. Reception can be indifferent, sometimes worse. The place knows it's irreplaceable, and that shows in how it operates.

Summer months (December–February) offer longest daylight and stable weather for trekking.
Who it suits
Multi-day hikers doing W Trek or full circuit who need a fixed base inside the park.
Worth knowing
Book meals and rental gear well ahead; common facilities require low expectations.
Price range
Mid-range for Patagonia; expect USD 80–130 per night depending on season and room type.
