Almanaque Fotográfica is a compact gallery in Roma Norte that takes photography seriously - rotating exhibitions of contemporary work by Mexican and international photographers, well-lit rooms, original prints at accessible prices. You can see a thoughtfully curated show in 15 minutes and discover someone you'd never heard of. That's the real value. The problem is equally real: multiple documented accounts from buyers, volunteers, students and visitors describe hostile treatment at the desk, with specific reports of racial and economic discrimination in access. The gap between the gallery's stated mission to democratize art and the reported experience at the door is the most relevant fact the star ratings obscure.
The door may be closed, and if it opens, the reception can be cold enough to make you wonder whether you read the address wrong. That said, the gallery itself is one of the better photography spaces in the city: rotating curation, national and international photographers, and prices that are not just for collectors
